*NEW COURSE* ANTH 2589 THINGS MATTER
Visiting Instructor Sevil Baltalı Tırpan MW 9:00-9:50 AM

We live among things through which we survive, communicate, negotiate meaning, perform identity and social status, imagine, understand, remember and shape ourselves and the world. This course will be an introduction to material culture studies. In addition to reading diverse theoretical approaches to material culture in anthropology, we will analyze the relationship between things, humans, society and culture through case studies.

*NEW COURSE* GSGS 3559 HERITAGE: PRODUCTION, PRESERVATION AND DESTRUCTION
Visiting Instructor Sevil Baltalı Tırpan TuThu 9.30-10.45
This course is designed to study how the ‘past’ is shaped, recreated, possessed, forgotten, experienced, remembered, destroyed and erased in the present. Heritage is produced through different motivations such as nation-building projects, archaeological practice, culture preservation efforts, identity construction, history making, place making, neoliberal notions of development and tourism, capitalist notions of economic benefit/profit and commodification. Objects, monuments, buildings, sites and landmarks of the multiple ‘pasts’ are transformed into re-objectified entities of the present that are intended to represent locality, culture, identity, ethnicity, national and transnational histories. Heritage production is a process in which cultural values are formulated, negotiated, accepted and contested continuously. Heritage is also destroyed as a way of erasure of memory and cultural cleansing. Through theoretical discussions and ethnographic case studies mainly from the Middle East, the course will analyze the topics of the production and destruction of heritage.
